2011 RiverFest™ Artist
Manuel Ponce has been selected to design the 2011 RiverFest™ poster. A prolific Mardi Gras artist, Ponce is a native New Orleanian who resides in Old Gretna. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of New Orleans and has worked with carnival organizations for 30 years. He is one of the lead designers at Blaine Kern Artists, where he says he learned his technique and unique style.
As an illustrator, he also designs cups, doubloons and medallion beads for use in Mardi Gras parades. Additionally, he works in a variety of media, including acrylic, oil and watercolor, and has produced a number of limited edition Mardi Gras prints.
Ponce said he grew up listening to jazz and often listens to it for inspiration. The 2011 poster will be previewed and available for sale in March 2011.

I love New Orleans. For the past seventeen years, I have spent much of my life painting about the city’s rich culture and I am proud to be apart of its unique community. From the moment I arrived, as if a seed planted is fresh soil, the city nourished and gave me a sense of being. I am thrilled to be invited to do this piece for the 2010 Old Algiers RiverFest™ as part of its fundraising efforts to give back to the community. The RiverFest committee asked me to convey the history of Algiers and to tell a story of its contribution to jazz, as we know it today. I thought about our ancestors and our lineage, the Gumbo, the mix, and all that is uniquely New Orleans. To the locals, “The Holy Trinity” as in our religion, our food, our people, and our music all of these combined is the culture of New Orleans.
I am happy to be a part of the 2010 Old Algiers RiverFest™,

When Terrance Osborne’s Congo Square poster sold out in 2007 at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, his already-rising star ascended even more. In 2008, RiverFest™ was lucky to have him create the official poster, which was almost a sell-out as well. He came back this year to create a companion piece.
The hues of the original painting create a somber mood, but as your eyes move upward to the sky, you see the joyous musicians who have ascended to their rightful place, after creating vibrant sounds for the world to enjoy.
Osborne has been on the local scene for the past decade, producing bold and intriguing art that is now collected world-wide. In recent years, his paintings have increased tremendously in value as his acclaim continues to broaden. He and his wife Stephanie operate Gallery Osborne in Gretna, Louisiana. |
